Developing Excellent Leaders

Established in early 2007, the Senior Careers Development Service (SCDS) endeavours to enhance leadership capability, capacity and resilience within the Scottish police service, in order to address the growing leadership challenges at senior strategic levels.

SCDS provides personal and professional development opportunities through key Development Streams to all Superintending ranks and police staff in an equivalent role, as well as Chief Officers and Executive Police Staff based in Scotland. The National Senior Careers Advisory Service (NSCAS) provides support for those officers and staff based in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Other Development Streams provide development opportunities to specifically identified groups such as the Accelerated Careers Development Programme (ACDP), 'under-represented' groups within the Scottish police service and some Force-based teams or groups.

Led by the ACPOS Leadership Development Co-ordinator, Supt Thom McLoughlin, and based within the Scottish Police College, the SCDS comprises of a full-time Co-ordinator, and three part-time Development Advisors: Janette McCrae, Ann Roberts and Fiona Sykes.
