SCDS engagement with, and support for, the Accelerated Careers Development Programme (ACDP) is designed to provide an integrated approach to leadership development for the Scottish police service.
A Development Advisor (DA) liaises extensively with the ACDP Co-ordinator in the design of four whole-day workshop experiences per year for all participants in the ACDP.
During 2009 the workshops designed and facilitated by SCDS included:
- Personal and Professional Development Planning (PDP) for ACDP participants
- Personal and Professional Development Planning for Force Liaison Officers
- Myers Briggs Type Indicator focussing on personal and other awareness
- "Values and Violence" linking with core values addressed in PDP and leadership
- a whole-day workshop which reviewed, synthesised and built upon the previous three topic areas.
In 2010, the series of integrated workshops focused on developing a collaborative team approach to Quality of Service Delivery Enhancement Projects. This approach was designed to:
- enhance and 'showcase' the vision, creative talent and leadership potential of ACDP officers in terms of addressing issues of real importance to Scottish policing
- provide ACPOS with a source of practical and creative action plans and recommendation for quality of service improvement for Scottish policing
- raise the profile and benefits of the ACDP programme in the eyes of ACPOS and the Forces
Informal guidance and feedback has been provided for PDPs where requested from ACDP programme participants who have been preparing for Case Conferences.
In a limited number of instances, a one-to-one DA session has been provided for officers as a 'special request' approved by the ACDP Co-ordinator.
In addition to workshop attendance, all Chief Inspectors participating in the ACDP meet for three individual development sessions with the SCDS DA each year.
SCDS also offers Chief Inspectors work-shadowing and participation in key SCDS events as opportunities arise.
